Last week I went to see a friend in Hellevoetsluis. A couple of hours by public transport so I was glad her boyfriend drove me from Amsterdam to see his girlfriend.

In the 17th Century Hellevoetsluis housed the Dutch warships and the city also played a major role in the early trade (read: slavery) business, helping the Dutch economy grow beyond measure. Not that far from the city is Delfshaven. From which in 1620 a couple of Pilgrims set sail to England on the Speedwell to join their fellow Seperatists on the Mayflower and go on to be the Founders of the USA. 

A single person, accident or disease could have prevented tens of millions of natives from getting killed and Northern America and global politics would have looked very different today.

If you ever visit The Netherlands, please consider to not only see my hometown of Amsterdam but check some of the other (maritime) history. It will be well worth your trip!

This piece of prose sprang to mind because I felt a bit lonely and the autumn weather made me think about the friends and relatives who crossed over, these past few years:

New Possibilities (a #poem)

The autumn of his life

felt as quiet as it was outside.

Emptiness overwhelmed him

and his heart felt cold.

Of course he could allow himself

to slowly drown

in memories and emotions

but he decided

to open the door

to new possibilities
