The other day I was in the wonderful city of Haarlem for a photoshoot. At about half an hour from Amsterdam, there are of course quite a few similarities between the two. But I have yet to see this solution for a few problems at once in my hometown. Haarlem has placed containers for bottles and cans at busstops.
It prevents regular bins from getting too full, people don't have to go far to get rid of their excessive cans and bottles and the homeless can take them out and hand them in at supermarkets for a small deposit, preventing quite a bit of litter in the process. At the same time they don't have to beg for the around €3 for a spot at a shelter including food and a shower. Experience tells it's better for people's self esteem if they feel like they have to work for their money and a clean person has a better chance of landing a job.
Or: how a simple and practical idea can help people ànd save some tax payer's money.

Like in most parts of the Netherlands, also Haarlem has dedicated bike lanes. One of the major reasons seeing someone wearing a helmet in The Netherlands is considered a touristic attraction by the locals: since interactions with cars are a rarety, bike helmets are not really needed.
Earlier that morning I visited a friend in Amsterdam who lives in a part of the city where I don't come as often as I would like to.
The paint on this mural had only dried up a few days earlier. The neighbourhood loves this depiction of an old fisherman. A reminder of the days Amsterdam was thè seaport of the country, before - and much more practical - Rotterdam took that title.
The next day was a beautiful Summer day, so I couldn't resist spending time reading in the shadows of a young tree, while gently swaying on (in?) this swing. What would you call it...a bucket swing?
Never too old to get on a swing, right? You don't have to be a child or be at a certain type of club for adults who like to swing to enjoy the ancient mode of relaxing, me thinks.

This week's piece of prose is a short one:

Stories (a #poem)

In the end
all we have
are stories
