In my Amsterdam neighbourhood as well the city as the inhabitants do their best to make things 'gezellig'. A typical Dutch word to describe you feel safe, welcome and comfortable.
With the simple things in life, like enjoying a rare, sunny day, a little chat with neighbours, friends and combinations thereof. Hence the city provides small playgrounds and little parks that serve as oasis in the hustle and bustle of every day life in the big city. And yes, a city with a mere 800,000 inhabitants, we dutchies call 'big'.
Do you live in a neighbourhood where people ask you how you are doing and mean it?
It's not uncommon to find cosy seatings for the weary traveller or share a cup of tea with a friendly neighbour:
Now it's Spring and getting a bit warmer, I look forward to occasionally bump into one of my neigbours

A circlepoem (first and last line are identical) I wrote recently after a conversation with a friend on housing prices and the illusion of freedom:
The Land of the Free (a #CirclePoem)
The Land of the Free
is the Land of the Detainee
Most people here
are only free
to enrich their owners;
their boss and their bank
Who do you want to be?
What kind of future do you see?
Perhaps you want a house by the sea,
or feel comfortable with moaners,
some big loss and the ongoing prank:
A life of goods and TV
and the illusion of living in
the Land of the Free

Your poem stings but it is the truth.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI love the concept of gezellig. We don't have that in our neighborhood. It is a nice neighborhood but it is a transitional neighborhood. People move in from out of town and then move someplace nicer in town after a little while.
For me poetry is a not so intrusive way to convey my feelings and to touch sensitive subjects. Every neighbourhood has its charm of course and we all have our different needs and wants. Had I been born and raised in a rural area, I may not have liked the city so much.
