For four days in Augsust, the city of Amsterdam was home to hundreds of boats and ships from all materials, sizes, ages and countries. Sail Amsterdam takes place every five years since 1975 but got canceled five years earlier because of the covid-lockdown. Making this the tenth edition. In the year that Amsterdam got its city rights 750 years ago, no less!
I'm not a professional photo- or videographer and there are far better (moving) pictures of the event out there but here's a small taste. If you like maritime history, a tour of a new or old warship or want to experience what it feels like to 'hoist the big sail, matey!', the next edition will be in August 2030 so you have a few years to save up and make the trip.
Dozens of skippers will proudly welcome you on board but just watching the boats glide by is an experience in itself. You may even spot our King, Willem-Alexander. He's not only a KLM Boeing pilot (if you fly with them and 'Captain van Buren' welcomes you onboard; that's him) but also an experienced skipper and stood beaming at the helm of one of the smaller boats. Boys and their toys, eh?
2,5 Million people visited the event over the course of four days and the most serious incident was a case of ten people getting very wet because their boat could hold eight and capsized because of their dancing. So, big shout out to the organizers, alert policemen- and women on jetski's and the hundreds of volunteers.

The event combined with the memories of a pretty woman inspired me to write this:
Safe harbours (a #poem)
She was the wind
and I was the sails
She pushed my boundaries
towards goals
I had never imagined
and guided me
to safe harbours
