It's a privilege to show you pictures of my hometown of Amsterdam this week:
The street on which I live and my favourite waterfront spot at some two minutes walk. Do you have to go far to watch the sunset from the waterfront?
After sharing dinner with a friend at a restaurant at some twenty minutes from my house (Amsterdam really isn't that big), I walked home through a neighborhood where I worked some fourty years ago. The alleyway I passed is older. It lead to an inn, sometime not long after the Middle Ages. For those longing for 'the good ol' days!', it served as a public toilet and a means of income for the ladies of the night, muggers and other 'couleur locale' that were invisible during the day.

It's called 'Bierdragersgang'. Literally 'Beer carriers corridor'. Can you guess the profession of the people who mostly used it?
We had a few days of Summer. Instantly to be enjoyed because in The Netherlands you never know when the next Summer day may be. I always take my Dopper water bottle. Which won some design awards for being made of recycled plastic, the cap serves as a cup and when you unscrew it, the bottle is fairly easy to clean. Often I engage in some light reading. Like Yuval Noah Harari's 'Nexus', centered around the question: "What is information really?" "Is that a back pack hanging from a flagpole?" Yes, and the flag of the city of Amsterdam. Hanging out the schoolbag is a (only Dutch?) habit signifying the start of adulthood: it sways in the wind notifying passersby a young adult just passed their high school exams.
Do you have similar traditions in your part of the world?

This weeks poem was written in the dressing room of a theatre in Middlesbrough, UK in December 2024:
To be Copied (a #poem)
The smell of sea
and the sound of her breath
The wind in your hair
and the salt in the air
does wonders to the soul
like smiling at a dog
in a Christmas jumper
A penguin
about to be kidnapped
or at least
to be copied

Hanging out the school bag sounds like a fun tradition. We don't have that here. I never tire of seeing photos of the Amsterdam area!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHave no idea when or where of why the tradition started but I like it too. Just like I like Amsterdam. Other place can be nice too, of course.
VerwijderenWe don't seem to have any traditions for those that just graduated high school. Yours sounds like fun. I love what I've seen of Amsterdam. I always stop there on my way to other parts of Europe or to go to Africa. On one occasion I took a day tour and enjoyed it very much. I love your 2nd photo of the sky. I live in a city bounded on several sides by the ocean but I still have to travel a bit to get to the waterfront for photos. Happy weekend to you.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenYou probably have traditions we don't have that I would find amusing. Always welcome back in Amsterdam! Africa, South-America and Asia oh...and Antarctica are continents I have not yet visited.
VerwijderenI enjoyed the cyber tour of Amsterdam area from your eyes.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenMy pleasure!
VerwijderenI'm not aware of any tradition like hanging a backpack here in the states. When I graduated from high school there were lots of people, I considered friends who I never saw again.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSorry to hear that about those 'friends'. There's a Dutch song about that very subject: Vriendschap is een illusie ('Friendship is an illusion'). I am vry fortunate to still be friends with about a dozen of the people I was friends with in high shool, some 40 years ago. As a matter of fact: just planned a mini reunion with half a dozen.
