The other day I worked as an entertainer at a party in Assendelft. At some hour and a half by train from Amsterdam the town serves as a suburb for those who prefer a bit more quiet area to reside. A friend of mine lives there but unfortunately he was away for the weekend so we couldn't meet up.

Here's the view of the place from the trainstation which they share with a neighbouring town:

 A typical neighbourhood and modern.

Although Assendelft is one of the older settlements in The Netherlands.

The town was mentioned as far back as 500BCE.

What's a party without balloons, eh? It's also not very far from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport so it's a common sight to see planes fly over.

We had good weather all day. Only when it got time to leave, the skies turned autumn grey:

Luckily for me most of the rain fell while I was on the train back to Amsterdam. This time choosing Sloterdijk Trainstation. Heavily expanded about two decades ago to take some pressure of Amsterdam Central Station, as demand for car use lowered and use of bikes and public transport increased.

This piece of prose came to me when I saw my neighbour standing in the door opening at the back of his house:

Dinner (a #poem)

There he stood

in the door opening

contemplating life 

in general

and his life

in particular

He wondered about the universe,

what life his children would have,

how people would remember him

and if things would ever be right

again in his home country.

Until his wife called him back in

to start dinner

Should the government protect people or not?

In The Netherlands we have this weird policy since the late seventies: "Dead civilians don't pay a lot in taxes and sick civilians are not very productive". So the government takes measures to keep people healthy and alive. A few of those measures I wrote about earlier.

Keeping people save explains the fact there is no Dutch word for pothole; any civilian can report one starting and it gets fixed within a day or two.

Do you have a lot of potholes in your area? What's the government policy on them? Do you have a government like we have in The Netherlands or do you have a government that doesn't invest a lot in infrastructure and maintenance of structures like oil pipelines? Causing a rupture in the Keystone Oil Pipeline in North Dakota in april 2025.

The Trump administration also doesn't invest in language education. And it shows:

Should a government do its best to keep its people safe or do its best to gain more money and power for itself and its sponsors?
