Walking home after movie night with a friend, I passed this street near my home in Amsterdam:
With a neighbour I sat on a bench overlooking this body of water:
After an emotional couple of hours (a friend had passed) I decided to do some 'uitwaaien'. A Dutch expression literally meaning 'out blowing': letting a breeze help you get rid of the virtual cobwebs in your mind. Usually done at the beach but anywhere where you can catch a bit of wind while walking is basically fine. A bird was kind enough to fly low into the frame as I hit the shutter button. I like to think my dead friend flew by to say hi.
After dinner with a friend (yeah for friends who are still alive!) I passed several canals in the town center, including this one. Fun fact: Amsterdam has about three times as many canals as Venice, Italy. Not Venice Beach, California.
In yet another part of Amsterdam lives a friend who celebrated her birthday. Nice to know we still get along after we dated for some time, some 28 years ago. And to my pleasant surprise her parents were there too!
The passing of the friend inspired my to write this poem. I call this genre 'circle poem' because the last line is identical to the first one):
To catch a Shadow (a #CirclePoem)
How to catch a shadow
if you've never chased a dream?
On time moving on
without knowing it stood still
or on promises broken
by a night or the will
to end the ability
to describe an angel
without ever having seen one
or even heard of their existence?
Try to love
without empathy and you'll fail.
Try to feel
without touch and you'll fall
because you'll never know
how to catch a shadow
